The warmth of DC in the spring compared to Boston is no joke! That was a surprising (to me) bonus of this quick visit to Virginia.

Boston Public Library Wedding - Polly and Kate
After all the reschedules for covid and all the waiting, this incredibly magical night at the Boston Public Library still blew my mind.

Cat and Ben - Cape Cod Wedding - Quissett Harbor House
One positive lesson from 2021 was the possibility that I could be three weeks away from meeting fantastic people and shooting their wedding and not know it yet!

Ahhh weddings at home. Only possibly better when your home is on a bluff in cape cod and you get a beautiful day with sea breezes, fields of unmown queen anne’s lace, and two welcoming families who let me be a part of it all for a day.

When I saw Tim mid-conga line with his suit and his birkenstocks, I really knew weddings were back. Not that they went anywhere, backyard weddings and tiny weddings will always be incredibly special in totally different ways. But that something had been missing from all pandemic-era weddings until this year.

Kim and Anthony’s wedding came at the perfect time for me because I had just finished re-tiling my entryway with cement tile and couldn’t change my mind and buy the floor tile pattern at Glass House.

I only got to spend a much-too-brief time with Catherine and John at their wedding - their priorities were absolutely correct to get married safely in front of family and friends, spend a quick time on the beach with me, and have a tiny socially distanced party in their yard.

I almost always claim that I’ll be out on the dance floor because if I’m going to take pictures of you dancing, you’ll get to see my sweet moves - but apparently it takes two things to keep me slightly farther away: a pandemic, and the level of dance skills in these families.

Although 2020 may have forced everyone’s hands into planning smaller weddings, it may have also given everyone permission for a level of closeness and informality that I hope never leaves. Airbnbs being the new venue of choice, food trucks and bbq for catering, dogs running loose, it doesn’t get any better!

I would have been the smuggest person on earth to have planned the exact wedding I wanted and have it be completely pandemic-proof! These two didn’t have to change anything from their original plans despite what 2020 threw at them. 10 people at an airbnb with a food truck and a beach, perfection.

When someone tells me “backyard wedding” my mind immediately thinks hot dogs, shorts, maybe a kiddie pool. I do NOT imagine a sailcloth tent, beautiful flowers and a full bar! Some people just know how to party.

When it comes to weddings, having things come together according to plan is rarely the result of coincidence, but months and years of hard work by lots of people. Scheduling a wedding for peak foliage season and then getting it, along with streaming sunshine - well, that’s just a lovely coincidental icing on the cake (or doughnuts, in Emily and Will’s case). I realized how easy it was to get jaded about fall - in Boston it’s mostly ornamental but beautiful leaves, and a nice temperature change. Driving up to Tamworth for this wedding, though, was a re-introduction to real fall - and it just got lovelier once I started the day with Emily and Will and their plans.

One thing we talked the most about was their dog, Toby, and I may have spent as much time with him on their wedding day as I did Steph and Ryan. That’s just an explanation, in case you have a dog and I end up talking about and then spending more time with your dog(s) than you. Any “meeting” with me will inevitably devolve into a back and forth of our dog pictures, or should you currently be dog-less, of mine. So when Toby went out for a walk on the breakwater at Spring Point during Steph and Ryan’s reception, we took it as our cue to join him for some portraits.

Despite growing up in southern Maine, I find that there are huge parts of it (most of it) that I’ve actually never seen. So when two of the kindest humans invite me to observe their stunning good taste in each other, locations, and decor, and witness their York wedding, I’m excited!

On a blisteringly hot day, where everyone was too happy and love-filled to notice or care, Kate and Jon’s wedding at Misselwood on the north shore had laughter, thunder, and a full re-enactment from Dirty Dancing (between dude friends).
